Springfield Set to Clash With Carthage In NCAA Elite Eight
Springfield, Mass. - November 15, 2011 - For the first time since 1996, the Springfield College women's volleyball team will play in the NCAA Division III Championship Elite Eight on Friday afternoon when it clashes with Carthage College.
Fresh off winning the NCAA Division III Regional Championship in four sets against UMass Boston on Sunday afternoon, the Pride will play at 3:00 pm on Friday against Carthage College from Wisconsin in the Lady Reds first-ever appearance in the quarterfinals.
Springfield has reached the NCAA Division III Championship quarterfinals on two previous occasions, in both 1995 and 1996. All told in Division III competition, Springfield has made seven trips to the NCAA Championship and has posted a record of 12-6.
Carthage, which stands at 33-6 on the season and was ranked ninth in the Nov. 8 American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, won its regional championship on Sunday afternoon with a come-from-behind, 3-2 win over No. 2 Washington University.
Also on competing this weekend will be, No. 11 the University of St. Thomas (Minn., 32-4) who will take on No. 4 Eastern University (35-2) at 5:30 p.m. On the other side of the bracket, No. 5 Wittenberg University (34-3) will play No. 17 California Lutheran University (29-6) at 8 p.m., and No. 6 Christopher Newport University (36-4) takes on No. 18 the State University of New York-Cortland (42-1) at 12:30 p.m.
