Warhawks Grind Out 3-2 Win in Oshkosh
The UW-Whitewater women's volleyball team, ranked twenty-first
in the most recent American Volleyball Coaches Association poll,
didn't let a slow start throw them off in grinding out a 3-2
(13-25, 25-23, 25-21, 19-25, 15-5) win over UW-Oshkosh on the road
The Warhawks could have fallen apart after stumbling to a 25-13 loss in the first set but they didn't. UW-W bounced back and battled to take set two 25-23 to even the match 1-1.
Whitewater used an 8-3 mid-set run to provide a cushion in another close set leading to a 25-21 third set win over the Titans.
Oshkosh turned the tables on UW-W, going on a 10-2 run to end set four with a 25-19 advantage knotting the match at two sets apiece and forcing the decisive fifth set.
Both teams traded points until, with a score of 5-4 in favor of Whitewater, the Warhawks opened up the set and allowed the Titans to score only once more in the set in a 15-5 rout of UW-O to win the match.
Sofia Sanchez (Janesville/Craig) led UW-W with 18 kills, the most this season for a Warhawk, and added four assist blocks and 12 digs. Leanna Lillge (Watertown) pounded down 10 kills in the match. Defensively at the net Lauren Grant (Antioch, IL) made good on six assist blocks. Three Warhawks joined Sanchez with double figure digs led by Kelsey Nobilio (Johnsburg, IL) with 19, Alyssa Bauer (Naperville, IL/Central) added 17 and Heidi Buss (Cedarburg) recorded 10.
The Warhawks improve to 22-7 and 5-1 in conference play. The Titans fall to 17-16 and 3-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Whitewater will continue league play Friday, October 28 in River Falls for a 7:00 match-up with UW-RF.
